This week, we continued our exploration of tragedy through our viewing of the TED Talk, "Are we in control of our own decisions?", and our reading of the play, Antigone. I really enjoyed the TED Talk because it caused me to think about the control that each of us have over our every day lives and the choices that we make in a whole new way. I also liked reading Antigone because it was interesting to see how it was similar to and different from our reading of Oedipus.
The poem of the week that we read and analyzed this week is one of my new favorites. "Barbie Doll" is about the bullies that we may face and the pressures that we experience to look perfect. The poem illustrates society's views on what makes us beautiful, and how this failure to focus on the true beauty that we all have inside our hearts can cause us to break emotionally and mentally. Although this poem was very sad, I liked it because I believe it is very powerful and it describes the harsh truth of the incredibly terrible consequences of our judgments on one another. I have heard stories in the news of how bullying has affected students and worn them down to the point where they don't want to face their peers at school, their friends, or family members. There are some cases were students have become so broken from the constant pressures they face to look a certain way, that they have ended their own lives. It breaks my heart to hear these stories and I like how this poem speaks a powerful message that may help us to recognize that we may not know what each person we encounter is going through. I wonder and hope that it may give us a new perspective on how our words and actions affect others and help us to be kinder to one another to prevent situations similar to the one described in "Barbie Doll".
